Dress Up Your Own Teddy Bear - A Timeless Gift

Kids love to create things. From "helping" out with baking the cookies to making clothes for their Barbie dolls, it seems little girls cannot have enough of the creative world. So, if your little girls are in need of some creative project, here is a fun an efficient one: create your very own workshop for designing and dressing up a teddy bear. If you feel more adventurous, you can even deviate from the teddy bear theme and use any stuffed animal that your daughter likes, or that she has.

The best part about this fun project is that you can use a plush toy from her collection or get a new one, just for this purpose. It is up to you, based on the time you want to allocate for the project and the meaning you want to give to the game. To start laying the ground work, get the teddy bear you want to transform, some of your daughter’s old clothes, some scissors, ribbons and clothing tape. Now, that you have all of this in place, get some white sheets of paper, crayons and your imagination ready. Like a professional designer, start drawing your model, the bear, and dress it up with accessories. Scarves, hats, booties, sunglasses, purses or any other fashion item you want. Create several designs and when you have a good amount to choose from, start with the one that best fits the mood. If you are not sure, go by how the mood of day is, or the season you are in. Or better yet, choose a fun beach outfit, to contrast a rainy autumn day. As it was said before, you are the designer. You choose what your stuffed animal will wear.

Just to make the example come to life, here is my suggestion of what my daughter and I created one afternoon. It was a very cold day in winter and she wanted to make sure that Snuggles, her favorite plush dog, would have a warm night. So, we started drawing and imagining a way to dress him up for the night. Our design featured a lovely pair of cozy bootees, a night cap and a blanket. We used some of her old baby socks to give Snuggles four beautiful and very colorful cover-ups for his paws. For the ones that were a little big, we used some ribbon to tie them tight. From one of her old t-shirts and some ribbon we created the blanket. We simply cut a square and sowed some ribbon at one of the ends. Then, we wrapped it around his shoulder, making him look like a sleepy Superdog. However, this way we made sure that the blanket never gets lost. After all, the ultimate purpose was to keep her plush dog warm.

The night cap, was a little bit trickier to create. My daughter designed a bonnet style cap, but for some reason, all my shower caps were way too big for Snuggles’ head, so we had to improvise. We used one of dad’s white socks and created a more manly night cap for Snuggles. We cut the top off from the sock and used some ribbon to make a pom-pom ending. This last touch made it look extremely authentic, and why not say it, quite adorable. My daughter had a blast and it was the perfect activity to keep busy with on such a cold day. Of course her design went on the fridge along with the other beautiful outfits she had created.

So, if you want to encourage your daughter’s creativity this is surely one activity you do not want to miss on. It is very easy to put together and it is a perfect indoor game you do not want to miss on, rain or shine.
